Observation Narrative
A higher elevation dry Quercus montana and Quercus rubra dominated oak-yellow pine-heath forest on a vertically convex west facing slope. The abundance of Gaylussacia baccata and Pinus rigida and pungens is characteristic of these forest stands often occurring on and restricted to the area at and just above a steepening of slope. The yellow pines are usually older and not reproducing; i.e., fire has been through in many decades. The relative youth of the canopy trees (130-150 years), the absence of old cut stumps and the fact that old downed wood is about the size of the standing live wood together suggest this stand may have regenerated after a more or less complete fire kill. No recruitment of pine.
Plot located ca. 200 ft downslope @ 275 degrees from plot GJNF011 on ridgecrest of Peters Mountain, 2.0 mi N1W from Morning Knob.
